Construction Program

Roles

Construction projects, such as our home builds and house repairs, ensure that our organization can provide safe and secure homes for families in our communities. Volunteer groups, led by trained and experienced lead builders, construct 16x20 homes for families in one day -- no experience is necessary to volunteer in these projects.

Our Construction Roles

Corazón house builds are successful because of our volunteers. Anyone can become a Corazón affiliated volunteer - Lead Builder, Blue Shirt Volunteer, and Red Shirt Volunteer.

Lead Builder - Lead Builders are trained Corazón affiliated volunteers who direct building activities throughout the build day. Lead builders are in charge of delegating tasks and informing groups of safety procedures.

Blue Shirt Volunteer - A blue shirt volunteer is a Corazón affiliated volunteer who attended at least nine (9) construction projects in one calendar year. Blue Shirts are volunteers that understand the Corazón Construction process and hold sufficient experience to guide volunteer groups throughout their build.

Red Shirt Volunteer - A red shirt volunteer is a Corazón affiliated volunteer who attended at least four (4) construction projects and expressed a commitment to volunteering with Corazón in a bigger way, usually to become a blue shirt.

Our construction leaders help guide volunteer groups to complete construction projects. There are currently nine (9) different construction projects.

  • Build Date: Select a Saturday build date and include 2 back up dates in case your first choice is not available.
  • Location: We construct homes in Corazón communities located in Tijuana, Mexico, and Tecate, Mexico. House + Bath projects are built in Tijuana. House + Bath + Septic are built in Tecate.
  • Open or Restricted:
    • Open builds are projects that all volunteers are allowed to join - whether they have an affiliation with you or not.
    • Restricted builds are projects that only permit a specific group’s volunteers to join. Sponsors are welcome to open a restricted build if their project needs more volunteers.
  • Bus or Car Caravan:
    • Bus Transportation: Corazón collaborates with a local bus company to provide transportation to and from our Corazón community and meet-up location (360 E H Street, Chula Vista, CA). Bus fee varies when adding meet-up locations. Please contact office@corazon.org to inquire about bus fees.
    • Car Caravan: Sponsor groups may travel to the build site with their own cars. Groups that travel by car caravan should purchase one-day Mexican Auto Insurance. However, groups that are new to Corazón and/or are an Open Build are advised to travel by bus.
